Whilst working with The South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) I worked on two walking tours for their app ‘In Their Footsteps’. The app explores the lives of the artists, writers, thinkers and makers that have lived and worked in the unique landscape of the South Downs through walking tours that link to museums and heritage sites with the South Downs.
For the first tour I oversaw the production of a walk for Petersfield Museum who created a route around the town that explored the work of Flora Twort. For the second tour I researched, wrote, recorded and oversaw the production of a tour around the beautiful Seven Sisters Country Park that explored the life of Pitt Rivers and it’s this tour I’d like to give you a bit of behind the scenes for.
First I researched the life of Pitt Rivers and liaised with the SDNPA’s wonderful Culture and Heritage lead to work out how Pitt Rivers could have been influenced by the landscape at Seven Sisters and how we could bring out the archeology and mystery that was beneath the feet of the visitor.
I then created a script that incorporated eight points within the Country Park and connected them to eight points in Pitt River’s life in order to explore his work and how it connected to the South Downs, the coastline at Seaford, barrows and listed monuments within the park, and the remains of a medieval village there.
I’ve created a little run through video of the app and you can listen to the first stop via this video. To listen to the whole tour and six others all within the National Park, hop on over to your favoured app store and search for ‘In Their Footsteps’ or for Google and Apple app stores click on the links below the video.
I’m really pleased with how the tour turned out and I hope that you will enjoy the tour as much as I did putting it together. Better still I hope it encourages you to visit the wonderful South Downs if you haven’t already done so.
Very nice!
This sounds great! Will be sure to use if I visit ☺️
